Abstract

Prudentius’ hymn about the martyr Cassian can be interpreted as a myth of writing’s materiality. The myth seems to reappear in Kafka’s In der Strafkolonie , Ingo Schulze’s 33 Augenblicke des Glücks, and other modern writings. Patterned like the myth of Pygmalion, the myth of Cassian tells about a “creative” act in which materiality cannot be mastered and does not disappear. On the contrary: it communicates his obstinacy as a sign of a cultural process that is always painful. But while Prudentius understands the materiality of writing as a means to an end, Kafka poses the question whether it is possible to think of writing’s materiality without semantic transfer, as an end in itself.
