Abstract

In a number of poems, Thomas Hardy deals with composition and inspiration, the two poles of the discourse of literary creativity. The present study focuses on Hardy's approach to, and position in, this discourse. It illustrates the writer's ambivalent attitude towards the myth of the Muses, the equation of songbirds and poets, and the Romantic idealization of the power of the imagination. It also discusses the role of memory and Darwinian nature. Hardy's skepticism is explained with reference to his aesthetic of incongruity and his late-Victorian experience. Hardy questions the privileged role of seers and poets. Consequently, his poems play down the power and effect of the inspirational moment. In psychological terms, his poet-figures confront their memories and cope with long-buried emotions. In spiritual terms, they may have to recognize that their worldview is not shared by everyone. Intellectually, the inspirational experience may lead to new insights into the nature of reality, encourage the poets to criticizes themselves, or to pursue new aims in their works.
