Abstract
Ein antiker Leser, der sich zum erstenmal mit der an dritter Stelle stehenden Schrift des heutigen Nag Hammadi Codex II (p. 51,29–86,18) vertraut gemacht hat, war vermutlich überrascht, dass er soeben ein nach Philippus benanntes »Evangelium« hinter sich gebracht hat, wie es die Titelnachschrift Πεγ
ΓΓελιΟΝ ΠΚΤ φιλιΠΠΟ
»Das Evangelium nach Philippus« (p. 86,18–19) anzeigt. Denn nicht nur nach dem Maßstab der neutestamentlichen Evangelien, der für Leser, die der Gnosis nahestanden, nicht normativ war, sondern auch nach den Merkmalen gnostischer und anderer ›apokrypher‹ Evangelien ließ sich das in Codex II aufbewahrte »Evangelium nach Philippus« schwerlich jener Gattung zuordnen. Für die Schrift als ganze lässt sich keine Gattungsbezeichnung finden, der ihrem literarischen Charakter, ihrem Inhalt und ihrer Komposition gerecht würde, denn das EvPhil
»is not a gospel in the usual sense; rather, it is a collection of theological statements concerning sacraments and ethics. These statements are expressed in a variety of literary types: aphorism and analogy; parable, paraenesis, and polemic; narrative dialogues, dominical sayings, biblical exegesis, and dogmatic propositions«.
Gleichwohl hat die Schrift seit ihrer Wiederentdeckung unter dem Signum »Evangelium« ihren Lauf durch die wissenschaftliche Welt angetreten: »Das Evangelium nach Philippus. Ein Evangelium der Valentinianer aus dem Funde von Nag-Hamadi«. Mit dieser aus der Titelnachschrift übernommenen Gattungsbezeichnung geraten Übersetzer und Interpreten des EvPhil freilich immer wieder in Erklärungsnot.
