Why Did the Scholars of al-Andalus Distrust al-Ghazāli? Ibn Rushd al-Jadd's Fatwā on Awliyā' Allāh

Abstract
The reception of Ghazālī's thought in the Muslim West brought about a series of negative reactions that resulted in official condemnations of his books and eventually led to their public burning. According to the logician Ibn Ṭumlūs, the fuqahā' appeared before the Almoravid amīr claiming that Ghazālī's books could lead Muslims to lose their faith, and thus recommended their burning. From other reports of the same event, one might infer the existence of two waves in the official campaign against Ghazālī: the first taking place in 503/1109, during the government of ‘Alī b. Yūsuf (d. 538/1143), and the second during the short reign of Tāshufīn b. ‘Alī (538–40/1143–45).
