Verklärte Normalität. Gustav Freytags Soll und Haben und der Ursprung des ›Deutschen Sonderwegs‹

Gustav Freytags Musterroman des deutschen Realismus, Soll und Haben, wird hier erstmals eng auf zwei für seine ästhetische Komposition maßgebliche Kontexte bezogen: den sozialgeschichtlichen Kontext des Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts dominant werdenden Normalitätsdiskurses, und den quellengeschichtlichen Kontext der einflußreichen Programmschrift Ludwig August von Rochaus, Grundzüge der Realpolitik. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird deutlich, daß das Verhältnis zwischen realistischer Literatur und Realpolitik kein bloß kompensatorisches ist: vielmehr wird, vor allem am virulenten Antisemitismus und Antislawismus des Romans, vorgeführt, daß das für den deutschen Realismus kennzeichnende, ästhetische Verfahren der ›Verklärung‹ sich unmittelbar auf den neuen Diskurs der Normalisierung stützt, während es umgekehrt einen konstitutiven Beitrag zur Herausbildung des eigenartigen nationalen Identifikationsschemas der Deutschen leistet.

For the first time, Gustav Freytag's exemplary novel of German Realism, Soll und Haben, is studied in close relation to two contexts of great importance to his aesthetic composition: first, the socio-historical context of the discourse on normality which became dominant in the mid-19^th century, and second, the source-related context of Ludwig August von Rochau's influential programmatic text Grundzüge der Realpolitik. Against this background it becomes clear that the relationship between Realist literature and Realpolitik is not a purely compensatory one. In particular consideration of the virulent anti-Semitism and anti-Slavism of the novel, we show that the aesthetic process of »transfiguration« which is typical of German Realism instead draws directly from the new discourse on normalisation, while at the same time contributing to the formation of a unique German national identification scheme.
