Politik und Mythos: Das Heroische Sonett

Abstract
Contrary to J. C. C. Mays, recent editor of the poems of S. T. Coleridge, this article maintains that the anonymous sonnet beginning “Stanhope! I hail …” (1795) should be ascribed to the young Coleridge and be seen as a first draft of his poem on Lord Stanhope, later published in the Poems on Various Subjects (1796). New arguments support an earlier editor's opinion (Campbell 1893). The poem is also shown to closely relate to John Milton's sonnets on Fairfax, Cromwell, and Vane. All these conform to a type of text that could be classified as ‘Heroic Sonnet’. Typical features of this genre are a structure ultimately derived and adapted from ancient Greek liturgy and a subtle use of the concept of hero and the process of heroification as found in the tales of mythographers of classical antiquity.
