Moderne Adoption ist Gegenstand liberaler und ›multikultureller‹, biopolitischer und nationaler Imaginationen und Politiken. Die dabei entstehenden Ambivalenzen manifestieren sich in Spiel- und Dokumentarfilmen in einem sentimentalen Darstellungsmodus. Von »Stella Dallas« (1937) bis »First Person Plural« (2000) erzeugt Adoption affirmative, zugleich in Bezug auf Geschlecht, Klasse und ›Rasse‹ machtkritische Kippbilder.

Ausgehend von diesem ambivalenten kritischen Potenzial des Sentimentalen führt Anja Michaelsen in ihrer Analyse der medialen Gefühlsdisposition gegenwärtiger Familien Kultur- und Filmwissenschaft mit internationaler kritischer Adoptionsforschung zusammen.
