A Library of Memory in a Ptolemaic Reading Primer (P. Cairo J.E. 65445)

Abstract
Based on new photographs, this paper re-approaches P. Cairo 65445, i.e. the well-known Livre d’écolier — a school papyrus containing a list of reading exercises and an anthology of poetic texts, in which the texts are framed by a pictorial decoration. The introductory part of the discussion offers a re-assessment of the material aspects of the papyrus. In the following part, we focus on the drawings and their relationship with the text so as to offer two interpretations of the whole document. In the first one, the drawings framing the text are suggestive of the interior of a library, perhaps even the library of Alexandria. Another possibility is that the ornamental grid is intended to facilitate the memorization of the teaching material, a reflection of the (arguably Hellenistic) mnemonic method known as the mind palace technique.
