5 Ernesto Dethorey, a cultural mediator from the exile. Journalism, translation and networking
-
Ivan Lo Giudice
Abstract
The present chapter introduces Ernesto Dethorey (Barcelona, 1901–Stockholm, 1992), a Spanish journalist who lived most of his life in Sweden and became a reference point in Scandinavia for the Spanish-speaking world. Dethorey, who remains a relatively obscure historical figure to this day was one of those individuals who preferred to stay in the background at a time when his homeland suffered a bloody civil war and subjected to a harsh dictatorship. Dethorey was also involved in lobbying for the Nobel Prize in Literature. During the years of the Spanish transition to democracy he suddenly appeared in Barcelona in an attempt to promote Catalan writers within the Swedish Academy. His role is absolutely central to explaining the literary exchange that took place in the twentieth century between Sweden and Spanish-speaking countries: as a translator and as a cultural bridge, he managed to connect diverse regions and cultures.
