Abstract

The author of Hebrews is sometimes accused of having an “intellectualistic” concept of faith which stands in complete contrast to that of Paul and the rest of the New Testament. This article examines this thesis on the basis of concrete evidence in Hebrews and comes to the conclusion that there can be no question of an “intellectualist” concept. Faith in Hebrews means a “life in the face of God”. In faith, the believer shares in the invisible divine reality. Faith means being convinced of that which is not yet visible, but nevertheless real. A special feature of Hebrews is that Jesus himself is also presented as a “believer” according to Hebrews.
