Eruditi Thessalonicenses in the Entourage of Manuel II Palaiologos: Education and Learning in the Second City of the Empire — Research Data and Desiderata
-
Demetrios C. Agoritsas
Abstract
This chapter presents an overview of the intellectual activity and teaching of the Thessalonian scholars associated with the emperor Manuel II Palaiologos in its historical context. The rare testimonies regarding education in Thessalonike during the final quarter of the fourteenth and the early fifteenth centuries lead us to the conclusion that there was no lack of a fully-rounded education system, which, among other things, aimed to the prepare and train public officials, notaries and judges. Certainly, the political and socio-economic situation at that time did not contribute to the further strengthening of intellectual activity in the city. As a result, many young people sought better conditions and possibilities for higher education and professional development in Constantinople. Finally, the role of the local Church and its hierarchs must be regarded as important, contributing significantly to the body of ecclesiastical literature.
