Abstract

New words in Maltese can be formed on Semitic roots or on Romance and English bases, but the latter, being mainly Anglo-Latinisms, tend to reinforce or adapt the Romance element of the vocabulary. Romance and English words are inflected according to Semitic patterns, whereas derivations and compounds add Romance prefixes and suffixes to words of both Semitic and Romance origin. Some English words of Germanic origin are also subjected to such adaptations.
