Chapter 2 The conceptualization of a legal status for marine environment through the evolution of terminology
-
Emma Lelong
Abstract
Legal language and law are related to each other, as law evolves through societal evolutions. This chapter traces the evolution of the marine environment over time as it is conceptualized within international conventions related to nature protection. In particular, it shows that the distance between human beings and their marine environment has shortened between 1946 and today, as the marine environment was before described in law as an object or a resource and can now be granted the status of subject of rights, formerly exclusive to humans.
