25 Looking for the Lost Decoration of an Apulian Volute Krater by the Painter of Sèvres 1

Abstract

The Apulian volute krater MNC 1, created by the Sevres 1 Painter and housed in the Sevres Museum, is a rich source of information-due to its size, iconography, and preservation-for enhancing our understanding of production techniques and decorative stages for Apulian vases produced around Bari during the last quarter of the 4th century B.C. It also provides insights into the context in which the vase was discovered and has been preserved until today. Indeed, only the preparatory motifs have survived; no overpaints are visible. The combination of archival research, photogrammetry, comparisons with other vases by the same painter, close observations using raking light, and multispectral analysis enables us to propose a virtual reconstruction of what the decoration of the MNC 1 might have looked like when it left the workshop.
