  • Oluwole O. Durodolu , Olatokunbo Christopher Okiki and Stella C. Nduka

Abstract

Information detergent seeks to promote a healthier information environment and reduce the negative impacts of fake news and misinformation. The chapter discusses using the following concepts to explain information detergent: confirmation bias, cognitive bias, echo chamber, and post-truth. In combatting information disorder due to the proliferation of social media, information disorder strategies were canvassed in tackling fake news that permeates the entire social media space, such as verifying the source of information, fast-checking, seeking multiple sources, avoiding echo chambers, applying critical thinking, and reporting misinformation to the appropriate authority. The chapter recommended that librarians should carry out information literacy training programs for their users to reduce the incidence of information disorder and promote information hygiene.
