Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the tonal marking of number on nominals in the Wagi dialect of Beria (Nilo-Saharan, Sudan). The investigation is based on archive data and fieldwork taking a descriptive approach. Seven nominal tone classes of distinct tonal patterns on singular and plural forms are identified. Singular tone patterns are analysed as lexically specified, plural tone patterns as combinations of the lexical pattern and a tonal plural morpheme. In noun phrases, this plural morpheme attaches only once at the right edge, which is in line with the behaviour of other grammatical markers in Wagi.
