Byzantine Hymnographers Named Θεόδωρος: An Attempt at Disambiguation

Abstract

The homonymy of authors is one of the numerous problems of authorship that Byzantine hymnographic texts can raise. Oftentimes, Byzantine hymns are attributed by a manuscript title rubric, by a marginal note, or by their acrostic to an author referred to only by his first name, a fact which leads to ambiguity when several homonymous hymnographers are known. As a widespread phenomenon, the issue of homonymy has been addressed by a number of scholars of Byzantine hymnography, who brought important clarification with regard to specific recurring names. The present paper turns to the question of the Byzantine hymnographers called Θεόδωρος.
