Abstract

Conductance of a solution is the current-carrying capacity of a solution due to the movement of ions. This chapter gives an introduction to conductance and various related terms such as conductivity, resistance, resistivity, molar conductivity, equivalent conductivity, etc. along with Ohm’s law and Kohlrausch’s law. It also elucidates the principle of conductivity, its measurements, and how measurement of conductivity helps in determining the nutrient concentrations in liquid fertilizers, control quality of water, etc. Conductivity is affected by many factors like amount and type of salt in solution, temperature of the solution, etc. Conductometric titrations, their advantages over volumetric titrations, and calculation of dissociation constant (Ka) of weak acid have also been discussed at the end of this chapter.
