Abstract

This paper proposes a comparison between the two Anabases as regards the way in which they present the leadership qualities of their respective protagonists, Xenophon the character and Alexander the Great. The paper starts with a quick survey of striking intertextual parallels between the two Anabases. Then follows a section which consists of close readings of situations where the protagonists of the two works help their men overcome difficulties and challenges through their unique leadership abilities. The analysis takes into consideration the themes, narrative patterns, and linguistic features which link the leadership narratives of Xenophon and Arrian. The final section of the paper discusses whether the remarkable similarities in content and form between the two texts could be taken as an indication of direct influence or, instead, as the result of the common theme.
