Community and the Others: Unveiling Boundaries in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice

Abstract

Shakespeare portrays conflict and opposition between the Christian Venetians and the Jewish community in The Merchant of Venice (1596-1598), although he was not personally familiar with Venice. His depiction of Shylock, the ‘merciless’ Jew, is a mere projection of the discrimination against Jews in England. Shylock and his community live at the social and physical periphery because of their religion. This article suggests how Shakespeare portrays the Jewish community in Venice for his London audience, and to what extent the Venetian community in the sixteenth century differed from the English people.
