Abstract

This essay offers a detailed exploration of Nietzsche’s Basel lectures on Greek religion, focusing on his extensive borrowing from contemporary literature and how he interweaves the borrowed material into his text. Using Nietzsche’s treatment of the Delphic Oracle as a case study, this essay shows that despite the large amount of borrowing, Nietzsche’s lectures do not depart from his particular vision of Greek polytheism, as is sometimes assumed, but, on the contrary, display a distinctly Nietzschean texture.
