Abstract

Gerard van Swieten (1700-1772) became prominent in his time as personal physician to Empress Maria Theresa (beginning 1745), as her advisor, and as a reformer especially of the monarchy’s medical system. Officially, he also held the office of prefect of the Court Library. Thus, it is natural to examine van Swieten’s position on the book. The focus will be on the everyday practices of building up the holdings of a public library such as the Court Library: The focus is not on spectacular acquisitions, but on acquisition channels such as private purchases, publishing contacts, booksellers, and auctions to guarantee a continuous supply of current literature. Book censorships play a special structural role in this process. The analysis will attempt to trace the development and shifts in weight during his almost 30 years as a librarian, in order to gain an insight into the library history of the Enlightenment that not only contours the Court Library of the time, today’s Austrian National Library, but may claim general validity.
