Abstract

Light detection provides a wealth of vital information collected from both the outside world and inside the body. Photodetectors serve as essential components in imaging systems and sensing devices by converting incident light signals to electrical signals. Beyond the limitations of conventional optoelectronic devices in rigid and planar platforms, novel fabrication strategies for stretchable photodetectors are necessary to address complex optical configurations in imaging systems and the current limited functional and structural freedom of wearable devices. To develop the next-generation imaging/sensing systems with high performance and compactness, research on flexible and stretchable photodetector arrays has been extensively conducted. Recent works focus on various flexible and stretchable photodetecting devices using functional materials and structural designs. In this chapter, major approaches to realize the flexible and stretchable photodetectors are discussed in terms of nanomaterials and their hybrids and structural engineering. The state-of-the-art imaging and sensing devices presented here highlight the remaining challenges and future directions in the development of flexible and stretchable photodetectors.
