Abstract

Over the past two decades, the field of stretchable electronics has advanced from initial ideas exploring the mechanics of simple metal-on-elastomer structures to complex, soft, and wearable technologies with applications in human health, robotics, energy storage, and more. This chapter acquaints the reader with this exciting and fastpaced field, focusing on the innovative design elements developed over the years to endow functional materials with stretchability. These design elements are divided into two philosophies: Structures that stretch uses intentional architectural designs-from simple wavy structures to highly complex hierarchical arrangements-that convert stretching strains into non-destructive bending strains. Materials that stretch takes a materialsbased approach to produce intrinsically stretchable functional materials through compositing or molecular engineering. This chapter provides the reader with the fundamental information necessary to understand the latest exciting developments in the field.
