, , and
Abstract
This chapter focuses on the economic costs of food safety and food recall. In this chapter the reader will be exposed to various definitions of key concepts, forms and types of cost classification as it relates to food safety and food recall. Furthermore, the estimation of the impact of an outbreak and costing prevention strategies will also be discussed. How food recalls affect individual, firms, and a country’s economy as a whole will be discussed. Finally, the chapter will give a brief summary and conclusion on the cost of food safety and food recall. This chapter will attempt to review the incidence of foodborne outbreaks, their economic and social impacts, and inherent challenges in the determination of economic cost of food recalls on a global scale as well measures that can be used to mitigate these impacts.
