Abstract
The evidence from related literature suggests that males are more prominent in the field of entrepreneurship, and despite increases in the number of female entrepreneurs, females find it difficult to sustain their businesses over a longer duration. Female entrepreneurs in India suffer greatly from societal restrictions, limited access to finance, poor social and human capital, and lack of mentorship. Our research question asks, in recognition of the gender gap in entrepreneurship, which factors have the greatest impact on the successful achievements of a female entrepreneur. In this chapter, we hypothesise about the factors which may lead to a female being a successful entrepreneur. We then seek to validate our beliefs by interviewing a selection of female entrepreneurs in India, with a secondary interview following up on the results of the first. The results identify confidence, perseverance and knowledge as being the core qualities that a successful female entrepreneur must possess.
