Abstract
This article surveys references to monasteries in various genres of late antique Islamic and Christian literature, demonstrating the ambiguous attitude towards monasteries reflected in these sources. Subsequently, the article discusses possible explanations for the notable lack of extensive descriptions of travel experiences in these sources.
