Wechselnde Gezeiten: Der Strand als Schauplatz für Wendepunkte in Heldendichtung und höfischer Literatur des Mittelalters

Abstract
The beach is a setting of permanent change. In medieval literature, the beach often serves as a setting of arrival and departure or as a liminal space so that it tends to be the location of a turning-point in the plot: As the coastline changes with the force of nature the plot changes with the impact of the newly arrived or departed. The following thoughts are concerned with the beach as a setting in heroic poetry (Beowulf, Battle of Maldon, Kudrun) as well as in courtly literature (Gottfried’s Tristan, Konrad’s Schwanritter, Alliterative Morte Arthur). The beach as a setting is not only a formulaic pattern stemming from oral tradition with a mnemonic function but also serves as a setting of change in medieval literature and contributes to the structure of the plot.
