Handbook of Nanoethics
This chapter is in the book Handbook of Nanoethics

Abstract

Nanotechnology is a field of advanced science that flourished in the twentyfirst century. Although nanotechnology has deeply penetrated into modern human life, it has not been well-discussed about its concern for human safety, its negative impact on ecosystems, and its impact on economic globalization. Setting a global standard for assessing the toxicity of nanomaterials is an urgent task. For that purpose, it is important to clarify the definition of nanomaterials and select model organisms that serve as the evaluation criteria for toxicity. Ethical considerations regarding the manufacture and use of nanomaterials are essential to ensure competition that guarantees coexistence between nations. Nanoethics is responsible for establishing a universal code of conduct for these issues. Nanoethics is an area where we work together in a language common to science and philosophy. Nanoethics will help to enhance our code of conduct by applying complementary relationships between science and philosophy.
