A Re-examination of P. Tor. Botti 34 A

Abstract
The topic of my PhD thesis is “Socio-Economic Lives of Women recorded in the Archive of Twtw (2nd century BC, Djeme)”. I would like to elucidate how women acquired and transferred properties or rights, especially among their family members, by analyzing legal documents drawn up for or mentioning them in the Archive of Twtw. P. Tor. Botti 34 A is a demotic document written for Twtw, the final owner of the archive, and his colleagues at the temple of Hathor. Although there is no mention of women there, I think that studying this papyrus is very important for the following two reasons: Firstly, this document records Twtw acting as an elder of the temple of Hathor. I think that knowing his professional aspect is indispensable to infer socioeconomic lives of his female family members, i.e. his mother Ta-nfr, his three sisters Tȝ-šr.t-Ḥ.t-Ḥr, Tȝ-rmwṱ, and Nȝy=w-ḥw, and his wife Ta-tw-Ḥ.t-Ḥr, whom I plan to focus on in my thesis. Secondly, understanding P. Tor. Botti 34 A correctly contributes to the study of the other documents which also reflect Twtw’s professional life, i.e. P. Tor. Botti 34 B/C, 35, 36, and 40. I think that considering why these documents were included in an archive that consists mainly of legal documents for private individuals may lead us to understand how this archive was formed. After comprehending the history of the archive, I would like to discuss my dissertation topic.
