In 1987, a key topic was the removal of medium-range nuclear missiles from Europe, as had been agreed in the INF Treaty. Tensions rose with the USSR after Mathias Rust’s landing in Red Square, but eased again with the July visit of West German President von Weizsäcker. General Secretary Honecker’s trip to West Germany, the Klaus Barbie trial in Lyon, and the Kurt Waldheim debate also preoccupied diplomats and politicians.
