Abstract
This chapter presents information about the context, language, and verbal culture of medieval Catalan Jews, together with an assessment and interpretation. In Section 1, after a description of the historical background and leading figures of the day, the chapter goes on to discuss one of the issues that has aroused more interest among scholars: the vernacular language used by Jewish communities. Section 2 deals with some of the documentary sources available (texts, inscriptions, glosses), while Section 3 addresses a number of script practices in the communities studied (calque translations, last wills, transactional documents, texts in aljamia script, signatures). Section 4 deals with a particular set of verbal genres and emphasizes the need to take into account both text and performance frame. Section 5 then describes some of the lexical and other features of the everyday language of Catalan Jews that can be deduced from the documentation available. Lastly, Section 6 examines the problem of Jewish languages, specifically Judaeo-Catalan. Both Sections 4 and 6 explore the issue beyond philology, discussing language in its social and cultural context and highlighting its relevance.
