Anglicisms in Italian. Typologies of language contact phenomena with particular reference to word-formation processes

Abstract
In this paper we examine different types of language contact phenomena through the analysis of a selection of Anglicisms in contemporary Italian. While studying these Anglicisms, we also explore the interference of various linguistic patterns such as new morphemes and word-formation rules and the influence of these processes on the dynamics of the restandardization of Italian. The cases of lexical and morpho-syntactic interference under scrutiny have favored the spread and success of new types of word-formation that have become frequent initially in special languages and subsequently in the common language. These features are becoming a characteristic of neo-standard Italian. Evidence will be presented to demonstrate the possibility that the outcome of interference can result in borrowings of new words as well as in inducing morphemes and in the enhancing of linguistic trends already present in the language. We show that neoclassical compounds, blends, new morphemes and in general new word-formation processes have an impact on the structure of Italian due to the transfer of new patterns.
