8 Language Learning Strategies
Abstract
This chapter introduces the historical development of L2 learning strategies. I first reviewed the assessment of language learning strategies by summarizing survey instruments developed by SLA researchers and educational practitioners over the years. Next, I reviewed research findings that shed light on individual differences in strategy use and the factors that result in individual differences in strategy choice and L2 learning performance. These findings highlight the effectiveness of strategy-based instruction on L2 learning. The chapter concludes by highlighting the remaining challenges for instruction and pedagogy related to language learning strategies.
