Abstract
Competent speakers have effortless mastery over talk; traditional theories about what happens when that goes wrong tend to locate the problem in the speaker. Conversation Analysis offers a radical alternative, stressing the role of the speaker’s interlocutors and the structures of conversation that all parties can use.
