Chapter 8. Summary and conclusion

Abstract

Saipanese English, a variety of English used in the north-western Pacific Ocean, has been the focus of this study. This variety has not received attention in the study of World Englishes so far and has not been described before. Thus, this study provides the first in-depth analysis of Saipanese English within the paradigm of World Englishes. With this present study, my aim was to bridge a gap in existing research: providing a socio-historical account, a general sociolinguistic description, and a detailed morphosyntactic analysis of the future temporal reference system and the quotative system of Saipanese English, and comparing it to other varieties of English as a global language. In light of the sociohistorical context of Saipanese English, the two specific morphosyntactic features were chosen as case studies for mapping where in the World Englishes paradigm Saipanese English might be. The study sheds light on the grammaticalization stages of these variables in particular, and on the status of Saipanese English in general. In the following, I will summarize the main findings of my study and highlight their implications in the research field of World Englishes. Finally, I will give a brief outlook regarding the future development of Saipanese English.
