A theory of social processes has to diagnose and explain those long-term and unplanned, but yet structured and directional trends in the development of social and personality structures that constitute the infrastructure of what is commonly called „history”. The reception of such a theoretical approach is hampered by the self-image of contemporary sociology as a discipline primarily concerned with the present time and devoted to research on short-term changes and causal relationships within given social systems. This self-image results from a problematic division of intellectual labour between history and sociology, but also from sociology’s increasing involvement in social practice, i.e. bureaucratically controlled social planning. While contributing to such planning, sociologists ignore the long-term, unplanned developments which produce the conditions for the present-day practice of planning and in which all planned social development is entangled. Complementary processes of functional differentiation, of social integration, and of civilization are strands of this complex long-term development. Its dynamics requires further exploration. Zusammenfassung Die Aufgabe einer Theorie sozialer Prozesse ist die Diagnose und Erklärung der langfristigen und ungeplanten, aber gleichwohl strukturierten und gerichteten Trends in der Entwicklung von Gesellschafts- und Persönlichkeitsstrukturen, die die Infrastruktur dessen bilden, was man gemeinhin „Geschichte” nennt. Die Rezeption eines solchen theoretischen Ansatzes wird durch das Selbstverständnis der zeitgenössischen Soziologie als einer primär gegenwartsbezogenen, auf die Erforschung kurzfristiger Veränderungen und Zusammenhänge innerhalb gegebener Gesellschaftssysteme gerichteten Disziplin behindert. Dieses Selbstverständnis ist eine Folge der akademischen Trennung von Geschichte und Soziologie, aber auch der wachsenden Praxisnähe der Soziologie, also ihrer Einbeziehung in bürokratisch kontrolliete Planungsprojekte. Dabei wird der langfristige, ungeplante Entwicklungsprozeß verkannt, der erst die Bedingungen für die Planungspraxis unserer Tage geschaffen hat und in den jede geplante soziale Entwicklung ständig verflochten bleibt. Komplementäre Prozesse wie Funktionsteilungs-, Integrations- und Zivilisationsprozesse sind Strähnen dieser komplexen langfristigen Entwicklung. Ihre Dynamik bedarf noch genauerer Untersuchung.

Two samples of university research institutes are analysed in order to study relationships between the amount of research infrastructure (in terms of machinery and technical services) on the one hand, and the characteristics of social organization and contextual relationships on the other. In the Swiss sample, especially the variable “technical services” shows positive correlations with bureaucratization of social structure, elimination of educational functions and - especially when the institute is small - with a general tendency for contextual isolation. On the other hand, Canadian institutes seem to preserve a decentralized, “professional” organization regardless of their amount of material or social infrastructure. Zusammenfassung Anhand der parallelen Analyse einer schweizerischen und einer kanadischen Stichprobe von Universitätsinstituten wird versucht, Zusammenhänge zwischen dem Umfang der Forschungsinfrastruktur (in Termini materieller Apparaturen und technischer Hilfsdienste) einerseits und der Organisationsform und kontextuellen Einbettung der Forschungsorganisation andererseits zu ermitteln. Bei den Schweizer Instituten zeigt sich, daß insbesondere der Faktor „technische Hilfsdienste“ mit einer bürokratischen Verfestigung der Forschungsorganisation, mit einer Ausgliederung von Ausbildungsfunktionen und - insbesondere bei Kleininstituten - mit einer generellen kontextuellen Isolierung korreliert. Kanadische Institute scheinen demgegenüber ungeachtet ihrer Infrastruktur eine dezentralisierte, „professionelle” Organisationsform aufrechtzuerhalten.

One of the few instruments for the analysis of urban sociospatial differentiation, Social Area Analysis, has been widely discussed and has met theoretical as well as empirical objections. In the actual search for indicators of urban differentiation, this problem gains new significance. A model of differentiation, developped out of the empirical knowledge of classical human ecology, is juxtaposed to the Shevky-Bell-approach. Empirical tests show that the indicators of Social Area Analysis may be substituted by two single variables: land value and rent, without any loss of information. Some areas for the application of urban indicators are discussed. At the end, some arguments for the relevance of the ecological approach in theory construction are presented. Zusammenfassung Die Sozialraumanalyse stellt eines der wenigen Instrumente zur Analyse der sozialräumlichen Differenzierung von Städten dar. Ihr Aussagewert ist indessen theoretisch und methodisch umstritten. Dieses Problem wird im Zusammenhang mit der Suche nach sozialen Indikatoren der Stadtentwicklung aufgegriffen. Aus den Befunden der klassischen Sozialökologie wird ein hypothetisches Modell der Differenzierung abgeleitet und mit der Sozialraumanalyse konfrontiert. Anhand empirischer Tests wird nachgewiesen, daß sich die Indikatoren der Sozialraumanalyse durch zwei einfache Merkmale: Bodenpreis und Miete, substituieren lassen, ohne daß damit ein Informationsverlust in Kauf genommen werden muß. Die Anwendungsbereiche solcher Indikatoren werden kurz diskutiert. Den Abschluß bilden einige Überlegungen zur Relevanz des sozialökologischen Ansatzes für die soziologische Theoriebildung.

Concepts of social proximity for pairs of persons within a network as well as possibilities to quantify similarity, interaction and cohesion, respectively, are discussed. A computer program is presented, that allows computation of a variety of “proximity measures”. These measures are rescaled into a 2- and 3-dimensional euclidian space by Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling. Finally, using the same data, it is demonstrated how cliques within a network may be identified by combining the program at hand with techniques of Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling and Cluster Analysis.

Central to all hierarchical social phenomena are the processes whereby individuals order each other. The paper summarizes the most relevant findings on ordering processes and then applies these findings to the explanation of various social phenomena. The most important direct consequences of ordering seems to be the “ordering- discrimination-effect” and the “vicious circle of powerlessness”. The former refers to the phenomenon that the lower an individual is placed on an ordering, the fewer positions he/she discriminates on this ordering. The latter refers to the effect the process of ordering has on the maintenance of an indivual’s low social position. Both effects should be considered in theories on typical phenomena of open societies, such as anomie, consumer behavior, and social mobility. The question is raised how the ordering effects can be reversed. The attempt to answer this question leads to the formulation of a hypothesis which is tested experimentally. The results confirm the hypothesis as well as various older findings on ordering.

Finnish sociology can be characterized by its main traditions: social anthropological and ethnological research since the 1890s, concrete sociostatistical, sociohistorical, positivistic research, and research based on historical materialism, and by its division into three academic subjects: general sociology, social psychology and social policy. In this presentation both aspects are employed. At the risk of somewhat distorting the picture, the person-centered approach of the recently published history of Finnish sociology (ALAPURO et al. 1973) is used. The present status of sociology in Finland and the research orientations of some of the numerous but small institutes of teaching and research are discussed.
