Contrary to much earlier theory recent findings demonstrate that polities are not on a converging course in industrial societies. Exploiting this finding, this paper focuses on authority codes as a factor of continuity in modernizing change. The main function of such invariance in authority codes is the maintenance, enhancement, and protection of societal identity from generation to generation.

First, it is asked whether the contributions to status inconsistency research can be considered as tests of the theoretical concept of status inconsistency. The central elements of the theoretical concepts are then dealt with and some theoretical approaches are described which fit into the framework of these common elements. The status inconsistency theory which is presented afterwards takes into account the coexistence of different norms of consistency, i.e. societal and stratum norms. Furthermore, the theory is used for a systematic presentation of consistent and inconsistent status configurations whithin stratification systems, i.e. consistent and inconsistent aspects of configurations are simultaneously analysed together with their structural location within stratification systems. The theoretical model implies complex hypotheses on social change and behavioral consequences of actors, especially in the case that different parameters of systems and marginal conditions are changed. Zusammenfassung Zunächst wird die Frage gestellt, inwiefern die Beiträge zur Statusinkonsistenzliteratur als Überprüfungen des theoretischen Konzeptes der Statusinkonsistenz angesehen werden können. Sodann wird auf zentrale theoretische Vorstellungen, die dem Begriff der Statusinkonsistenz zugrunde liegen, und auf die theoretischen Ansätze, die innerhalb dieser Vorstellungen möglich sind, eingegangen. Die Statusinkonsistenztheorie, die anschließend formuliert wird, berücksichtigt die Koexistenz verschiedener Konsistenznormen, nämlich von sozietalen und schichtspezifischen Normen. Sie entwickelt eine Systematik von konsistenten und inkonsistenten Statuskonfigurationen innerhalb von Schichtungssystemen, d.h. die gleichzeitig konsistenten und inkonsistenten Aspekte von Statuskonfigurationen werden zusammen mit ihrer strukturellen Lage in Schichtungssystemen betrachtet. Aus dem theoretischen Modell und der simultanen Variation einzelner Systemparameter und Randbedingungen lassen sich komplexe Sätze über den sozialen Wandel und über Verhaltenskonsequenzen bei Akteuren ableiten.

This paper is about a causal model of role-taking recently suggested by BERTRAM and BERTRAM. The model tries to combine aspects of the cognitive-developmental approach as proposed by BRUNER, PIAGET, and WYGOTSKI,and symbolic interactionism as advocated by LINDESMITH and STRAUSS. While the selection of variables is handled rather carefully, the identification and testing procedures may be criticized in three respects: They are tautological because the same equations are used for identifying and testing the model, they are contradictory because identification procedures applicable to recursive models only are applied to a nonrecursive model, and they are fragmentary because only a few although the most important of the possible comparisons of implied and observed correlations are computed. Thus, some of the author’s major conclusions seem not to warranted by the rules of path analysis. Zusammenfassung In ihrem Kausalmodell für Role-Taking versuchen BERTRAM und BERTRAM Aspekte der kognitivistischen Entwicklungspsychologie z.B. von BRUNER, PIAGET und WYGOTSKI mit dem soziologischen Ansatz von LINDESMITH und STRAUSS zu kombinieren. Während die Autoren bei der Variablenselektion sorgfältig Vorgehen, ist ihr kausalanalytisches Verfahren in dreierlei Hinsicht kritisierbar. Es ist teilweise tautologisch, weil Schätzgleichungen und Prüfgleichungen nicht immer auseinandergehalten werden. Es ist widersprüchlich, insofern als Schätzverfahren für rekursive Modelle auf ein nicht-rekursives Modell übertragen werden. Es ist unvollständig, da nur ein kleiner, wenn auch zentraler Teil der Modellimplikationen berechnet wird. Wesentliche Schlußfolgerungen der Autoren sind somit nach den Regeln der Pfadanalyse nicht gesichert.

The history of ideas has changed its conception of the relation between individuals and society several times. The Aristotelian tradition formulated it as a relation between individuals (friendship) using the concepts of selfreference and alter ego. PARSONS sees the relation as a relation between subsystems within the framework of an encompassing action system using the concept of interpenetration, not of individuals but of the personal and the social system. It is proposed to change this conception again. Interpenetration can be characterized as a relation between system and environment in which environmental systems contribute their own capacity for variation to stabilize the patterns of another system on a higher level. This conception has its roots in the early anthropology of the bourgeoise revolution (1650-1750). It can be used to elaborate on problems of socialization and of rationality within the framework of theories with multiple system references. Zusammenfassung Im Laufe der Ideengeschichte ist die Konzeption der Beziehung zwischen Individuum und Gesellschaft mehrfach geändert worden. Die aristotelische Tradition hatte ihre Gesellschaftstheorie auf der Basis der Beziehung zwischen Individuen (Freundschaft) aufgebaut und diese Basis durch die Begriffe der Selbstreferenz und des alter ego charakterisiert. PARSONS sieht das Problem nicht mehr in der Beziehung zwischen Individuen, sondern in der Beziehung zwischen personalen und sozialen Systemen, die er im Rahmen einer allgemeinen Theorie des Aktionssystems als Interpenetration begreift. Es wird vorgeschlagen, diese Konzeption erneut zu verändern. Interpenetration kann unabhängig vom Kontext der PARSONSschen Theorie charakterisiert werden als eine besondere Art von Beziehung zwischen System und Umwelt, in der Umweltsysteme ihre Fähigkeit zur Selbständerung beitragen, um Strukturmuster eines Systems auf höherer Ebene zu stabilisieren. Diese Vorstellung hat ihre Wurzeln in der frühen Anthropologie der bürgerlichen Revolution (1650-1750). Sie kann benutzt werden, um mit Hilfe von Orientierung an mehrfachen Systemreferenzen Probleme einer Theorie der Sozialisation und einer Theorie der Rationalität auszuarbeiten.

The study examines several well-known and some newly proposed theories of coalition formation by asking subjects to imagine themselves in circumscribed situations and - knowing all resources - to choose one or several coalition partners in the tetrad. The coalition tendencies are not predicted by one unique theory but by a bundle of theories in which the sometimes competing detail theories have their specific range of application. The findings corroborate the partial value of the theory of minimal resources (GAMSON), of maximal resources (new), of anticompetitiveness (VINACKE), of alliance of the similar (new). Secondorder theories like the thesis of preponderance of two-way coalitions (WILLIS) and the thesis of topic-dependent coalition behavior (new) are influencing the first-order tendencies. The theory of maximal control (CAPLOW) and the theory of rational behavior (VINACKE) on the other hand are less well confirmed. Zusammenfassung Die Arbeit überprüft verschiedene etablierte und einzelne neu vorgeschlagene Theorien zur Koalitionsbildung, indem Versuchspersonen sich in vorgegebene Situationen versetzen und - bei bekannten Ressourcen - einen oder mehrere Koalitionspartner in der Tetrade wählen. Die Koalitionstendenzen werden nicht von einer einzigen Theorie, sondern von einem Theorienbündel mit spezifischem Anwendungsbereich der z.T. konkurrierenden Einzeltheorien vorausgesagt. Die Befunde bestätigen die partielle Geltung der minimalen Ressourcentheorie (GAMSON), der maximalen Ressourcentheorie (neu), der Theorie der Antihaltung zum Wettbewerb (VINACKE), der Theorie der Allianz der Ähnlichen (neu). Als Thesen zweiter Ordnung wirken auf die Koalitionstendenzen außerdem ein: die Theorie der minimalen Mitgliederzahl (WILLIS) und die These eines themenspezifischen Verhaltens (neu). Die Theorie der maximalen Kontrolle (CAPLOW) und die Theorie des rationalen Verhaltens (VINACKE) werden dagegen den Daten weniger gerecht.

The article attempts an overview of the reception of MAX WEBERS’s sociology in the literature published since 1960. Considering the wide scope and specialization of this literature, six dimensions in the WEBER-reception are distinguished and taken up in turn: (1) WEBER’s comparative studies and historical typologies; (2) his basic methodological and epistemological contributions; (3) his place among theorists of “the bureaucratic age”; (4) his general and his academic politics; (5) the Marxist struggle against WEBER, but also scholarly comparisons of WEBER and MARX; and finally (6) WEBER’s biography in the context of the intellectual history of his and our time.

A historical and biographical sketch of the last year of MAX WEBER in Munich is followed by a discussion of the reception of WEBER’s work and an outlook on future tasks for research on WEBER. Zusammenfassung An eine zeitgeschichtliche und biographische Skizze des letzten Lebensjahres von MAX WEBER in München schließt sich eine Diskussion der Rezeptionsgeschichte des Werkes und ein Ausblick auf zukünftige Aufgaben der WEBER-Forschung an.
