The religious autonomy of individuals in contemporary multi-religious society also places challenges before religious instruction. In order actually to be student-oriented, it must concentrate on the other places of learning the faith besides school (family, peers, congregation, media) and their interdependencies, all of which have their own concepts of religious formation. These insights have to be attained on the basis of the principles of systems theory and supplemented by a recognition of the biographies of the students. Only with this systemic consideration can there be adequate research about how children and youth construct their faith with reference to their experiences of the world.

Perception of the “clerical paradigm” as the main problem of practical theology and theological education has perpetuated a “fallacy of misplaced concreteness,” as philosopher Alfred North Whitehead might say, or the mistaking of a helpful generalization for concrete reality. Does the concept of the clerical paradigm adequately comprehend the problems, or does it contain hidden prejudice against practice and doubts about the church itself? This article argues that the idea of the “clerical paradigm” has so dominated the discourse of practical theology that it has distorted understanding of the needs of pastoral practitioners, misdirected blame, and hence left other problems unattended, particularly the rise of an equally challenging problem, which might be called the “academic paradigm.” In relying so heavily on the construct of clerical paradigm, theologians eager to revitalize practical theology inadvertently denigrate congregational and pastoral “know-how.” The article begins with an analysis of Edward Farley's proposal, but the challenge lies less here than with its subsequent use and misuse. The article therefore turns from this analysis to an exploration of problems raised by the academic paradigm and alternative ways to redeem the value of practical know-how so readily dismissed under the reign of the clerical paradigm. Zusammenfasssung Die Wahrnehmung des „klerikalen Paradigmas“ als Hauptproblem der Praktischen Theologie und der theologischen Ausbildung hat den „Trugschluss der unzutreffenden Konkretheit“ , wie der Philosoph Alfred North Whitehead sagen dürfte, oder das Fehlen einer hilfreichen Verallgemeinerung für die konkrete Realität immer wieder verfestigt. Versteht das Konzept des „klerikalen Paradigmas“ die Probleme angemessen, oder enthält es verborgene Vorurteile gegen die Praxis und zweifelt an der Kirche selbst? In diesem Artikel wird argumentiert, dass die Idee des „klerikalen Paradigmas“ den Diskurs in der Praktischen Theologie so dominiert hat, dass es das Verstehen der Bedürfnisse der pastoral Tätigen verzerrt, Verantwortung fehl adressiert und folglich andere Probleme unberücksichtig gelassen hat, insbesondere das Aufkommen eines ebenso herausfordernden Problems, welches das „akademische Paradigma“ genannt werden kann. Indem sie sich so sehr auf das Konstrukt des „klerikalen Paradigmas“ verlassen haben, werteten Theologen, die danach eiferten, die Praktische Theologie zu revitalisieren, unbeabsichtigt gemeindliches und pastorales „know-how“ ab. Der Artikel beginnt mit einer Analyse von Edward Farleys Ansatz, aber die Herausforderung liegt weniger hier als in dem daraus folgenden Gebrauch und Missbrauch. Deshalb wendet sich der Artikel weg von dieser Analyse hin zu der Erforschung von Problemen, die durch das „akademische Paradigma“ hervorgerufen werden, und zu Alternativen, um den Wert praktischen Wissens wiederzuentdecken, welcher unter der Herrschaft des „klerikalen Paradigmas“ so bereitwillig vernachlässigt wurde.

This article forms a part of a larger research project in the Paarl area of South Africa. This specific contribution comes from the field of liturgy. Ritual data were collected in several congregations by means of participatory action research. Some of the data gathered will be analyzed and interpreted here by means of ritual criticism. In this article, the theoretical foundation is briefly explained, as well as the specific way in which ritual criticism will be conducted. The concepts of social capital and poverty will first be explored, specifically with regard to the relation between the two concepts, as well as Ammerman's use of the concept of social capital in congregational studies. Following that, the so-called dimensions, processes, and qualities of ritual are presented. By making use of some of the data, the dimensions of ritual are discussed in the light of the concepts of poverty and social capital. The hypothesis with which this research works is that certain dimensions of rituals are “better” or “more adequate” with regard to the generation of social capital in contexts of poverty than other dimensions, and that, depending on the context, some dimensions may even be counter-productive in this regard. This hypothesis is then discussed in the light of the collected data by attempting to show how these rituals are functioning as generators of social capital. Zusammenfasssung Die Ergebnisse dieses Artikels sind Teil eines größeren Forschungsprojekts, das im Paarl gebiet in Südafrika durchgeführt wurde. Dieser spezifische Beitrag ist der Liturgik zuzuordnen. Mit Hilfe von ‚teilnehmender Beobachtung‘ in verschiedenen Gemeinden wurden Daten zu Ritualen erhoben. Einige dieser zusammengetragenen Daten werden hier im Sinne der ‚Ritual-Kritik‘ analysiert und interpretiert. Es wird sowohl die theoretische Grundlage als auch die genaue Art, in welcher Weise ‚Ritual-Kritik‘ durchgeführt werden kann, erklärt. Zuerst werden dazu die Konzepte ‚Soziales Kapital‘ und ‚Armut‘ untersucht, vor allem in Bezug auf das wechselseitige Verhältnis zueinander, ähnlich wie bei Ammerman's Verwendung des Begriffs ‚Soziales Kapital‘ im Rahmen der Untersuchungen in Bezug auf Gemeinden. Anschließend werden die Dimensionen, Prozesse und Eigenschaften von Ritualen präsentiert. Durch die Auswertung einiger der Daten werden die Dimensionen eines Rituals im Horizont der Konzepte von ‚Armut‘ und ‚Sozialem Kapital‘ diskutiert. Die These dieses Artikels ist es, dass gewisse Dimensionen der Rituale ‚besser‘ oder ‚angemessener‘ sind in Bezug auf die Erzeugung Sozialen Kapitals im Kontext von Armut als andere Dimensionen, und dass, je nach Zusammenhang, einige Dimensionen darauf bezogen sogar kontraproduktiv sein können. Diese These wird dann angesichts der erhobenen Daten diskutiert, mit dem Versuch darzustellen, wie diese Rituale als Generatoren des Sozialen Kapitals fungieren.

The portrait of the new heaven and earth painted by the prophet Isaiah has comforted and inspired the faithful in many generations. Grief and fear, instability and danger are excluded from this ideal society, as wolves and lambs feed together and lions eat straw like oxen. The texts speak to the human longing for peace, justice, and faith in a just and merciful God. What would it mean, however, for such a utopia to cohere as a viable way of life? What does such a utopian outlook say about the world as God's good creation? Can danger be categorically excluded from existence without losing the freedom essential to a worthwhile creation? This article engages the anti-utopian writings of Isaiah Berlin as a serious conversation partner for preaching Isaiah's prophecies (Isaiah 11 and 65), observing that grief, fear, social instability, and danger are inevitable characteristics of the freedom that makes life worthwhile. While humanity may long to escape the unpleasant and uncomfortable aspects of existence, utopianism is an incoherent concept, even when deferred to the afterlife. Indeed, utopianism runs counter to the idea that God prefers freedom to safety. Zusammenfasssung Das Bild des Propheten Jesaja vom neuen Himmel und der neuen Erde hat den Glaubenden vieler Generationen gefallen und sie inspiriert. Trauer und Angst, Unsicherheit und Gefahr sind ausgeschlossen in dieser idealen Gesellschaft, in der Wölfe und Schafe gemeinsam fressen und Löwen das Gras fressen wie Ochsen. Der Text spricht die menschliche Sehnsucht nach Frieden, Gerechtigkeit und dem Glauben an einen gerechten und gnädigen Gott an. Was würde es aber bedeuten, würde man eine solche Utopie mit einer praktizierbaren Weise des Lebens verbinden? Was sagt ein solcher utopischer Ausblick aus über die Welt als gute Schöpfung Gottes? Kann Gefahr kategorial ausgeschlossen werden von der menschlichen Existenz, ohne dabei die Freiheit zu verlieren als wesentlichen Teil einer sich lohnenden Schöpfung? Dieser Artikel beschäftigt sich mit den anti-utopischen Schriften von Isaiah Berlin als einem Gesprächspartner, Jesajas Prophezeiungen zu predigen (Jes 11 und 65), um dabei festzustellen, dass Trauer, Angst, soziale Unsicherheit und Gefahr unausweichliche Charakteristika der Freiheit sind, die das Leben lohnenswert machen. Während die Menschheit sich nach der Flucht vor den unangenehmen und unbequemen Aspekten der Existenz sehnen mag, ist der Utopismus ein inkohärentes Konzept, selbst wenn er auf ein Jenseits verschoben wird. In der Tat läuft Utopismus der Idee entgegen, dass Gott die Freiheit der Sicherheit vorzieht.

Although the religiosity of older adults can be regarded as an essential theme for practical theology, there is a significant deficit regarding research on religiosity and aging as a whole, especially the religious rituals of older adults. This article presents both the theoretical framework as well as the main findings of a pilot study that aims to investigate the possibility that there exists a phenomenon of a “desire for rituals” during the process of aging, by investigating different types of religious practice (e.g., private religious rituals, rites de passage ). The study showed that sociocultural pluralism leads to a multiplicity of individual forms of religious practice even at advanced ages. In addition, the relevance of intergenerational relations during times of religious practice moved to the center of attention.

The collapse of state church structures in Germany in 1918 and the attempt to reorient the Protestant regional churches ( Landeskirchen ) after 1945 have been accompanied in recent decades by increasing numbers of church member resignations. The affiliation to a church given by one's residence, parental home, or birthplace has been severed. This situation requires a new openness for and responsiveness to the experience of individuals and groups. Theology, proclamation, and the shape of the ministry today require a reflective orientation toward the principles of community-forming communication in churches. Further adherence to the oppressive language of Protestant theology and especially of Protestant worship stands in the way of this and blocks mediation of the faith to broad levels of society.

As a field of study, liturgical studies encompasses three disciplinary areas and relates to a number of different perspectives. This article surveys the landscape of liturgical study first by examining the work of prominent scholars in each of the disciplinary areas: Robert Taft and Paul Bradshaw in liturgical history, Geoffrey Wainwright and Gordon Lathrop in liturgical theology, and Mark Searle and Lawrence Hoffman in the study of liturgy as ritual and symbolic event. Three factors common to the work across disciplinary areas are noted: a turn to liturgy as practiced as the object of study, an anthropological turn in the method of study, and an orientation to the present practice of worship in the aim of study. The survey of the field continues with an exploration of perspectives in liturgical study related to liturgical reform and renewal, cultural contexts, liberation theologies, Pentecostal practice, and postmodern thought and culture. Each of these perspectives involves a scholarly discourse, a communal location (or locations), and a practical impact. Each perspective also proposes an alternative to conventional liturgical understanding and practice using a different principal source toward a distinctive aim. The article concludes with the sketch of a teaching approach to liturgical study that focuses on liturgy as a communal practice, specifically God's mission in the practice of assembly. It suggests how an orientation to the practice of Christian assembly might integrate the disciplines of liturgical study and how an orientation to God's mission might serve to negotiate the diverse perspectives. Zusammenfasssung Dieser Artikel untersucht die Landschaft der Liturgiewissenschaft, die sich in drei Disziplin-Bereiche gliedern lässt und mit einer Vielzahl an Perspektiven betrieben wird. Zuerst wird das Werk prominenter Forscher in jeder der Unterdisziplinen vorgestellt: Robert Taft und Paul Bradshaw in Liturgiegeschichte, Geoffrey Wainwright und Gordon Lathrop in der Liturgietheologie sowie Mark Searle und Lawrence Hoffman in der Erforschung der Liturgie als rituelles und symbolisches Ereignis. Drei Faktoren finden sich in all diesen Unterdisziplinen: Eine Hinwendung zur Liturgiepraxis als Objekt ihrer Erforschung, eine Hinwendung zur Anthropologie in der Forschungsmethode sowie eine Orientierung hin zur gegenwärtigen Praxis des Gottesdienstes in den Forschungszielen. Der Überblick über die liturgiewissenschaftliche Landschaft wird mit einer Erforschung der Perspektiven in der Liturgiewissenschaft fortgesetzt: im Zusammenhang mit liturgischer Reform und Erneuerung, kulturellen Kontexten, Befreiungstheologien, Pfingstlerischer Praxis sowie postmodernem Denken und postmoderner Kultur. Jede dieser Perspektiven beinhaltet einen eigenen Forschungsdiskurs, einen gemeinschaftlichen Ort und einen Handlungsimpuls. Jede der Perspektiven schlägt außerdem eine Alternative zum konventionellen Verständnis von Liturgie und ihrer Praxis vor, die eine je verschiedene Quelle nach einem je verschiedenem Ziel verwendet. Der Artikel schließt mit der Skizze eines Ansatzes für die Lehre der Liturgiewissenschaft. Dieser ist konzentriert auf Liturgie als einer gemeinschaftlichen Praxis, genauer missio Dei in der Praxis der Gemeinde. Sie zeigt, wie eine Orientierung an der Praxis der christlichen Gemeinde die Disziplinen der Liturgiewissenschaft integrieren kann und wie eine Orientierung an der missio Dei dazu beitragen kann, die verschiedenen Perspektiven miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen.

This article emerges directly from the setting of the recent war between Israel and Hezbollah on the southern border of Lebanon during the summer of 2006. Written by a Lebanese scholar in practical theology teaching in Beirut, it incorporates five letters written during that conflict into a larger framework of pastoral and theological reflection. As a whole, the article provides a case study of themes important within the ambit of practical theology, including spirituality, pastoral care, local context and history, ecclesial voice and relations, and political forces that impinge upon faithful living. Zusammenfasssung Dieser Artikel entspringt direkt aus der Situation des letzten Krieges zwischen Israel und der Hisbollah an der südlichen Grenze des Libanon im Sommer 2006. Er ist geschrieben von einem Libanesischen Praktischen Theologen, der in Beirut lehrt. Er veröffentlicht fünf Briefe, die während dieses Konflikts in einem größeren Zusammenhang von pastoraler und theologischer Reflexion geschrieben wurden. In seiner Gesamtheit bietet der Artikel so anhand dieser besonderen Situationen einen Zugang zu Themen, die innerhalb der Praktischen Theologie insgesamt und im Libanon im besonderen wichtig sind, darunter Spiritualität, Seelsorge, lokale Kontexte und ihre Geschichte, kirchliche Stimmen und ihre Beziehungen sowie politische Kräfte, die in das religiöse Leben eingreifen.
