The microstructural development associated with the formation of the compound (so-called “white”) layer on the surface of ferritic iron and iron-based alloys by nitriding has been presented in a comparative way on the basis of results obtained in the recent past by nitriding model systems. A tentative explanation of the strikingly different layer-growth mechanisms for iron and iron-based alloys has been offered. Attention has been paid in particular to (i) the possible occurrence in the compound layer of “mixed” iron-based nitrides, with the alloying element Me with affinity for nitrogen (e.g. Me = Cr, Al, V) dissolved substitutionally on the iron sublattice of the nitride, and to (ii) the various operative mechanisms for pore formation in the compound layer.

Kurzfassung Das Laserstrahlhärten hat sich als Verfahren zum Härten lokal beanspruchter Bauteile durch die Verfügbarkeit von Hochleistungsdiodenlasern und einer Reihe von systemtechnischen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre als Ergänzung zu klassischen Härteverfahren etabliert. Besonders der Formen- und Werkzeugbau, aber auch die Automobilindustrie setzen zunehmend häufiger dieses Verfahren ein. Durch Integration des Laserstrahlhärteverfahrens in die Prozesskette können Produktionskosten gesenkt und Fertigungsabläufe zeitlich gestrafft werden. Nach einer Vorstellung der technischen Möglichkeiten des Laserstrahlhärtens und der inzwischen verfügbaren Systemtechnik werden mögliche Varianten der Integration vorgestellt.

Kurzfassung Es werden die Auswirkungen kombinierter thermischer und mechanischer Festwalzbehandlungen am Beispiel des Werkstoffs Ck 45 in unterschiedlichen Wärmebehandlungszuständen studiert. Dabei handelt es sich um das Festwalzen bei erhöhten Temperaturen sowie um eine an die Festwalzbehandlung angeschlossene Auslagerungsbehandlung. In beiden Fällen werden im Vergleich mit konventionellen Festwalzbehandlungen Steigerungen der Schwingfestigkeit beobachtet. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die erzeugten randnahen Eigenspannungszustände sowie Mikrostrukturen und ihre Stabilität bei Ermüdungsbeanspruchung gelegt. Die versagensrelevanten oberflächennahen Werkstoffzustände werden durch die Tiefenverläufe von Eigenspannungen, Interferenzlinienhalbwertsbreiten und die Härte charakterisiert.

The specific hardness deviations of a Rockwell diamond indenter can be determined by a group standard, consisting of several indenters, using correction functions. In this paper the establishment of an HRC group standard in the PTB and comparative investigations of the group standards in the PTB and the calibration laboratory MPA NRW are reported. Above all the group standard is advantageous for maintaining the stability of the Rockwell hardness scales.

Kurzfassung Die HIP-Behandlung von Aluminiumguss beseitigt Restporosität und wird daher auch als Nachverdichten bezeichnet. Der Densal ® -Prozess ist eine neue HIP-Variante, die sich durch hohe Effizienz und geringen Kostenaufwand auszeichnet. In der Praxis schließt sich häufig eine separate Wärmebehandlung an, um den Werkstoffzustand endgültig festzulegen. In der vorliegenden Laboruntersuchung wird gezeigt, dass die Lebensdauer bei der Ermüdungsprüfung durchschnittlich um den Faktor 10 gegenüber nicht nachverdichteten, jedoch wärmebehandelten Gussproben steigt. Eine weitere Verbesserung lässt sich durch prozesstechnisches Verknüpfen beider Verfahren erreichen. Der integrierte neue Prozess heißt T6 Densal ® . Er erzeugt Gussteile gleicher oder besserer Qualität als der serielle Prozess [Densal + T6]. Seine Gesamtprozessdauer ist gegenüber dem seriellen Prozess um mindestens 30% kürzer und daher deutlich kostengünstiger.

A non-destructive online measurement system called “Bainite Sensor” is developed for the application of monitoring bainite transformation in salt bath adapted heat treatment equipments, nowadays controlled by computer assisted features. The measurement procedure is based upon eddy current harmonic analysis. Electrical and magnetic properties are measured and correlated to the relevant material properties. The Bainite Sensor device, housed temperature resistant and vacuum sealed, can also to be used for online process control. The system was studied carefully during an applied research program. Many experiments controlling the influence of sensitive parameters, such as state of austenitization and bainite transformation conditions of several ball bearing steels have been made and results evaluated. The investigations show that the Bainite Sensor allows the continuous in situ measurement of the bainite transformation. The most important constituent of the microstructure is the proportion of mother-austenite, which is measured continuously. It is possible to reproduce process cycles with a defined fraction of residual austenite as well as finishing the bainite transformation with any content of retained austenite without any delay by a time security factor. The application of the Bainite Sensor makes the bainitic treatment for hardening more reproducible, well directed and more economical. This innovation will improve the industrial competitiveness and foster the development of energy-efficient low-cost quality-assured bainitic treatment routines featuring of by improved properties such as reduced distortion, increased toughness, and sufficient surface hardness.
