About this journal
Antike und Abendland. Beiträge zum Verständnis der Griechen und Römer und ihres Nachlebens [Antiquity and ‚Abendland‘. Contributions to the Understanding of the Greeks and Romans and their Afterlife was founded in 1945 by Bruno Snell as the successor to Werner Jaeger‘s Die Antike. Zeitschrift für Kunst und Kultur des klassischen Altertums [Antiquity. Journal for the Art and Culture of Classical Antiquity] (1925–1944; edited by Wolfgang Schadewaldt, Bernhard Schweitzer, and Johannes Stroux after Jaeger's emigration in 1936). The title was programmatic in several respects. The expansion of ‚Antiquity‘ by ‚Abendland‘ (or Occident), and ‘Classical Antiquity‘ by ‚Afterlife‘, marked a clear departure from antiquity as the sole epoch in focus. Furthermore, it replaced, immediately after World War II, a lopsided German view by an 'occidental' panorama. With this comparative perspective in operation since the 1950s, the yearbook has established itself internationally as a forum for interdisciplinary discussions of topics covering the field of antiquity and the history of its reception. Amongst the disciplines represented on the editorial board are Classical Philology, Ancient History, Early Modern History, German Studies, Romance Studies, and English Studies.
Beginning with the Yearbook 70 (2024), Antike und Abendland will drop its subtitle to further broaden its range. Its former focus on antiquity’s 'afterlife' will be replaced by an emphasis on temporality and the variety of effects of classical texts and monuments in all their breadth. This augments a focus on the meaning and significance of the manifold references to these texts across a wide variety of cultural contexts, from late antiquity to a global present. This broadening of focus, however, also necessitates a particular point of view. With this in mind, Antike und Abendland has included a new section, beginning with volume 67 (2021), for contributions that report and critically reflect upon the position and role of Classics in today's society.
The publisher and editors welcome submissions that support the aforementioned objectives. Since 2019/20, all submitted manuscripts undergo a peer review process before publication.
