Abstract

Diaquabis(diketohydrindene-diketohydrindamine)manganese(II), Mn(II) complex of Ruhemann's purple, a condensation product of ninhydrin and α, L-alanine (or any α-amino acid), was synthesized for the first time and its structure determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The study revealed that the metal ion is seven-coordinated with two Ruhemann's purple ligands, one behaving as a didentate ON donor and another as a tridentate ONO donor, both monobasic, and two additional water ligands. The structure closely resembles a distorted pentagonal bipyramid (D5h) geometry.
