21 Microfranchising and the Poor

Abstract

Microfranchising presents opportunities to foster entrepreneurship, provide access to essential services for individuals at the base of the pyramid (BOP), and contribute to reduce poverty. This chapter leverages the network innovation (Dhanaraj & Parkhe, 2006) and imprinting (Marquis and Tilcsik, 2013) theories to analyze a few case studies in the agriculture sector from various geographical contexts to show how microfranchise is used in practice and its effectiveness. Policy implications for governments and recommendations for practice are discussed, emphasizing the need for supportive regulatory frameworks, investment in critical infrastructure, and inclusive approaches that prioritize marginalized groups. Additionally, further research is identified as crucial for understanding best practices, assessing socioeconomic impacts, and evaluating the role of policy in enabling microfranchise networks. Ultimately, microfranchising holds promise as a tool for poverty alleviation, enabling entrepreneurship and sustainable development, but continued research and strategic policy interventions are necessary to unlock its full potential.
