Die Verpflichtungserklärungen der getauften Juden von Toledo aus den Jahren 637 und 654

  • Wolfram Kinzig

Abstract

This article provides a new edition, German translation, and commentary of the Placitum of the baptized Jews of Toledo of 637. Thereafter, readers will find a discussion of the genre, date, place of origin, and authorship of the document, to be followed by an analysis of its content and historical context. The second section includes the text of the Placitum of 654, accompanied by a German translation and commentary. As with the previous document, the second Placitum is examined with regard to genre, date, place of origin, authorship, content, and historical context. When viewed together, the texts show that relations between Jews and Christians in the Visigothic Kingdom were more complex than has hitherto been assumed.
