The Electorate of Trier had five archbishops. As a result of the confessional dualism that began in 1521, their influence as electors in the imperial diets grew. From 1521 to 1540, they, along with the secular and ecclesiastical Imperial Estates, sought a feasible religious compromise. It was only the last elector who attempted to adapt his archdioceses to the ideas of reform propagated by the curia and the nascent Council of Trent.
