At a time when educational issues have increasingly come to determine the social and political discourse and major reforms of the education system are being discussed and implemented, and when migration has become a significant phenomenon, contributing to changes in the religious landscape of the European continent, it is highly appropriate to focus our attention on the concrete situation regarding religious education. This volume contains – again on the basis of thirteen key questions – the countries of Southern Europe (Republic of Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Andorra, Monaco, and San Marino). Beyond the all-important tasks of taking stock and making international comparisons, the aim of this book, that is the final volume of the series "Religious Education at Schools in Europe", is to create a foundation for further action in the field of education, especially with regard to interfaith expertise.

This volume focuses on international comparison and transfer against the background of the two projects “Religious Education in Schools in Europe” (RelEdu) and “International Knowledge Transfer” (IKT). The benefit of this approach can be seen in the concretization of methodological questions which in this way can be discussed with reference to these research projects and the questions associated with them. In addition, the two focal points of comparison and transfer are discussed in the wider context of internationalization, especially internationalization in science and particularly in research on religious education. This contextualization reflects the growing interest in international comparative research in religious education to which the present volume also contributes.

A central practice of both premodern and modern yoga, prāṇāyāma (“breath control”) is practised in yoga classes worldwide. Like the notion of prāṇa (“breath”, “vitality”), prāṇāyāma has a longstanding history in South Asia, constituting the fourth limb of Patanjali’s yoga. Since roughly 1850, prāṇa and prāṇāyāma have been reinterpreted in light of the ideas of Hindu reform movements, nineteenth-century occultism, science, biomedicine, and transnational hygiene. In this book, Magdalena Kraler traces the history of yogic breath cultivation between 1850 and 1945 for the first time. She reconstructs how prāṇa assumed a central role in the cosmological frameworks of modern yoga and how prāṇāyāma came to be understood as a form of self-cultivation. Engaging one of modern yoga’s key practices, this book not only offers a thorough academic analysis, but also responds to a growing worldwide interest in breath cultivation.

This book extends the contemporary debate on the global concept of religion, conducted in the context of religious studies, to the field of the theology of religions. In applying poststructuralist and postcolonial perspectives, it seeks to deconstruct central categories such as truth, universality, or religion, in order to contextualize them by making transparent their historical genealogy and entanglement with political, social, and scientific discourses. Further, it aims to outline new areas of thinking, which can serve as the experimental basis of an alternative, non-essentialist form of theology (of religions).

The contributions in the volume deal for the first time with Friedrich W. J. Schelling’s Munich Academy Lecture “Ueber die Gottheiten von Samothrake0 (1815) in its problem- and contemporary historical context, thus shedding new light on its philosophical development between 1812 and 1817. The study includes Schelling’s journal project “Allgemeine Zeitschrift von Deutschen für Deutsche” from 1813 as well as the “Bericht über die Aeginetischen Bildwerke” by Johann Martin Wagner, which he published in 1817. In this way, Schelling’s smaller writings provide a picture of his work in his early Munich period that has received little attention so far.

On the basis of the Absolute Idealismus der Mitwissenschaft (Absolute idealism of con-science) Michael Hackl formulates a concept of freedom, that explains our responsibility in regard to nature and spirit. Without this freedom of will neither morality nor ethics are possible. If we are not able to act in a self-determined manner, we act, how we act without being able to change our behaviour. Therefore, we cannot act in a moral manner since there is no must. We are per se directed by others and therefore powerless. Yet, if we are capable of free actions, this has the highest meaning for our actions. With this help, we can bring the good and beautiful into the world. If we ›have‹ freedom, freedom is our highest value, if we do not defend this value, it vanishes.

Around 1900, Vienna was one of the most important centres of Modernism and to this day is shaped by turn-of-the-century developments in art, culture, literature, architecture, etc. Many protagonists of Viennese Modernism were part of an extremely lively religious and alternative-religious scene, were inspired by it and promoted and shaped it. This volume focuses on the booming field of religion, religiosity and Weltanschauung around 1900 and examines the influence and specific repercussions of religious phenomena on art, culture, literature, philosophy and society of fin-de-siècle Vienna.

Andrzej Towianski considered himself a reviver of the Christian faith who strove to lead Christianity to a higher level of perfection. Traditionally, literary research in Poland focused almost exclusively on Towianski’s influence on Polish romantic poetry. The present volume shows this controversial personality in a new light and puts him in a European context from a religious-historical perspective. Here, Polish, German, French, Italian and Russian source material are being analysed, which can be found in the appendix partly for the first time. The work focuses on the posthumous and comprehensive Turin edition of Towianski’s works, presented as a collective work of his closest students. The author concentrates on connections and movements such as the early socialist Henri Saint-Simon, Jewish mysticism and mesmerism. Moreover, the author shows Towianski’s activities by using archived material.

At first sight, the provoking connection of two distant concepts hints at the dilemma of theology: God becomes a random legitimation of various contents and positions. In Geld oder Gott? (Money or God?) Falk Wagner focuses on the very recent debate on the ambivalent social meaning of money. In his view, money has taken the position of God as the only leading reality as it – under the influence of the modern and economically-driven society – penetrates all aspects of individual and social behaviour. The critical task of theology and church in Wagner’s opinion is located in the cultivation of a speech of God as the foundation of a non-economically defined but reciprocal form of human freedom.

Since Immanuel Kant’s religious writings of 1793 philosophical Christology has been consistently redeveloped. In the 19th century, Hegel and Schelling presented prominent conceptions. During the debates of the 20th century, this subject became less important in Philosophy although it never really disappeared. What is the difference between a philosophical Christology and a theological Christology and what answers can be found in a philosophical Christology? There is no Christian Dogmatics and Christian Religion without Christology. Both only exist through their reference to Jesus Christ. All contributors to this volume prove that there is no unified conception of Christology. The contributions refer to Christology in a historical, systematic, but also practical, philosophical, and gender theoretical sense.

This volume explores aspects of yoga over a period of about 2500 years. In its first part, it investigates facets of the South Asian and Tibetan traditions of yoga, such as the evolution of posture practice, the relationship between yoga and sex, yoga in the theistic context, the influence of Buddhism on early yoga, and the encounter of Islam with classical yoga. The second part addresses aspects of modern globalised yoga and its historical formation, as for example the emergence of yoga in Viennese occultism, the integration of yoga and nature cure in modern India, the eventisation of yoga in a global setting, and the development of Patañjali’s iconography. In keeping with the current trend in yoga studies, the emphasis of the volume is on the practice of yoga and its theoretical underpinnings.

The essays in this volume offer various international and regional explanations on the topic of inclusion. They encourage a problem and perspective-oriented understanding of inclusive practices. The different subjects focus on the significance of inclusive education and its practical challenges on the basis of an educational-scientific, theological, anthropological and religious educational point of view. They examine its consequences on school, religious education and religious didactics. These effects underline how much teachers require self-reflection and a modified formation and further training. Additionally, this volume depicts experiences of various practical fields such as the contact of students with refugee children and teenagers.

Rituale boomen.

Rituals are booming, whilst at the same time Christian churches have lost their monopoly on ritual and their traditional forms of ritual life have undergone significant transformations as well. In this volume, the contributors explore ritual change occurring within that field and outline research questions connected to it. Ritual dynamics are regarded paradigmatically in a thick description of the rites of the West-African “Celestial Church of Christ” and one Central European Evangelical worship service, whilst a look at Evangelical and Catholic wedding rites shows the diversity of ritual changes within “mainstream Christianity”. Inner and post-Christian transformations and developments of rituals are identified, from family-based ritual practices to a culture of celebration that uses elements adopted from different religions. The volume concludes with fundamental contributions to “ritual experience” and changes in the landscape of Christian liturgy.

What significance does post-Enlightenment philosophy still hold today for philosophical and theological problems? The contributors within this volume answer said question by discussing system concepts of the post-Enlightenment philosophy of reason, problematising their history of reception and, above all, by highlighting the systematic and structural significance it bears on contemporary questions. In doing so, the authors do not limit themselves to a specific philosophical subject, but rather emphasise how the scope of Classical German Philosophy’s theory of validity impacts the present.

Recent developments in technology have given rise to the impression that the boundaries imposed by our bodiliness can somehow be overcome. The increasing philosophical interest in bodiliness as an unavoidable human condition can be seen as a response to this far too comfortable impression. The essays in this volume address the topic of bodiliness from a theological point of view. They show that our perceptions of, and relationships with, one another cannot be divorced from our bodily condition, and that this existential reality affects significantly how we understand our relationship with God. The contributions also address how we can best deal with the fragility of our bodily condition, as well as the challenges that technological and medical procedures for altering the appearance and constitution of our bodies pose. Special attention is given to how liturgical experience not only offers us a means to respond to these challenges but also to deepen our understanding of Christian communities as ineluctably bodily.

In the academic, educational and political activities of the theologian and religious educator, Martin Jäggle, one of the chief concerns is to help build a »culture of recognition«. In his research, he seeks to give a voice to those who are not given a voice in matters of education and schooling, society, politics, religion and the church. By entering into dialogue with key texts of Martin Jäggle, scholars from different disciplines – particularly Catholic, Protestant and Islamic religious education, education, political science, social ethics, religious studies, philosophy and theology – develop perspectives that can open up the way to an interdisciplinary theory of the culture of recognition.

The book comprises a systematic presentation of conflicts over the building of mosques in Austria from a religious studies perspective. It describes and analyzes several conflicts in different federal states of Austria especially in the period between 2003 and 2008. The main focus of the study is the case of the construction of a new mosque in Bad Vöslau (near Vienna) which formed the basis for a research project in the field of empirical research on religion (2009-2012). Together with the case studies, the book describes the political context of labour migration to Western Europe from the 1960s and the historical development of Islamic centers in Austria. The final chapter offers a systematic analysis of these conflicts over mosque-building, combining the analytical perspectives of different disciplines (like sociology, space studies, and religious studies). The conflicts over mosque-building are seen as an expression of the tensions between the dynamism of the nation state and the processes of globalization and migration, between national concepts of space and new transnational spaces. The volume is the first scientific monography on mosque-building and related conflicts in Austria.

Religious traditions tend to consider a purely cognitive understanding of their holy scriptures as being insufficient. Different spiritual exercises function as preparation for grasping the deeper meaning of the texts. The oldest forms of interpretation are connected to ritual, meditation and prayer. On the other hand, quite early on, a process of differentiation began to separate interpretation and spiritual practice. Important sections of the explanation of authoritative texts were being relocated within institutions of higher education. This resulted in a tension between religious reading and scientific reading. This volume brings together an array of specialists who analyze the relation between spiritual practice and the scientific reading of holy texts in Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity. In addition to detailed historical analyses, particular attention is paid to the significance of contemplative exegesis in contemporary Christian theology.

Die Beiträge thematisieren die philosophische Entwicklung Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schellings (1775–1854) im ersten Jahrzehnt des 19. Jahrhunderts.

After the Darwin-Jubilee in 2009 well known experts of various disciplines of science, philosophy and theology should evaluate the situation of the discussion between evolution theory and the belief in creation. Charles Darwin’s theory and its continuation in modern evolutionary biology got in a constructive discussion with philosophy, theory of science and theology. This process should avoid any ideological hangovers, get over barriers, offer new perspectives of dialogue also on pending questions. This volume collects edited contributions to this interdisciplinary discourse, that took place at the University of Vienna in February 2010.
