Mit diesem Band stellt sich das im Mai 1997 errichtete Institut für Sozialrecht und Sozialpolitik in Europa der Fachöffentlichkeit vor. Dieses Institut der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel verfolgt - stets in Verbindung mit sozialrechtlichen Gegenständen - einen inter- und multidisziplinären Ansatz. Beiträge aus allen beteiligten Wissenschaftsdisziplinen sollen die Rahmenbedingungen für die Perspektiven einer sozialstaatlichen Umverteilung im deutschen Gesundheitswesen benennen. Ziel ist es, mehr über die Perspektiven der Gesundheitspolitik zu erfahren - in einer Zeit, da die sozialen Sicherungssysteme und damit auch die gesetzliche Krankenversicherung der Rationalisierung und Neujustierung unterworfen werden.

Der vorliegende Band entwickelt einen theoretischen Rahmen für eine vergleichende Analyse von Gesundheitsvorsorgeprogrammen. Dabei werden vier Programme berücksichtigt, die in sechs verschiedenen europäischen Ländern angewendet werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß der Erfolg von Gesundheitsprogrammen durch ein Zusammenwirken der Ziele, Verpflichtungen, zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln, des politischen Willens und der öffentlichen Meinung beeinflußt wird. Das Buch erscheint in englischer Sprache.

This comparative social analysis represents the results of the "West European Study of Health (WESH)". It is one of a few systematically comparative social science analyses of such national health systems as Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. Based on a total of 2500 cases the project analyses problems like health culture, social stratification in its impact on health, health life style and the motivations of people that shape health policies. This book meets both the expectation of descriptive information as well as comprehensive analysis by statistical means and on the background of practical as well as theoretical concerns. The policy implications of the results are eminent. The comparative design is of exemplary importance for health and social science.
