The volume documents Friedrich Schleiermacher’s (1768–1834) lectures on the Theological Encyclopedia based on lecture transcripts from 1816–17 and 1831–32. They formed the basis for his textbook A Brief Account of Theological Studies, published in 1811 and then in a second edition in 1830. For the first time, this book makes available lecture transcripts about both editions of the Brief Account.
Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768–1834) is one of the most influential theologians of recent centuries. This is the first critical edition of his lectures on dogmatics or the doctrine of faith, which are simultaneously a monument to the evolution of his theology.
Literary and philosophical scholars have long anticipated the publication of a comprehensive critical edition of Schleiermacher’s Lectures on Hermeneutics and Criticism (1805–1833) based on his manuscripts and various lecture transcripts performed by students. This new volume specifically makes available for the first time the transcript of the 1819 lecture undertaken by Schleiermacher’s beloved student and subsequent literary executor, Ludwig Jonas, as well as Braune’s transcript of a lecture from 1826. In the latter, Schleiermacher addresses the issue of criticism from philological and other perspectives.
Schleiermacher delivered lecture courses on church history in Halle and Berlin in 1806, 1821/22 and 1825/26. For Schleiermacher, church history describes how a living faith community was formed based on divine revelation through Jesus Christ, and how this community developed and spread among humankind. This volume provides an edition with commentary of all of Schleiermacher's manuscripts for these lectures, together with excerpts from student notes. A large proportion of the material presented here has not been published before.
An appendix contains two previously unedited preliminary handwritten studies by Schleiermacher for his essays on dogmatic history relating to the doctrine of election (1819) and the doctrine of the Trinity (1822).
Critical edition of Schleiermacher's Vorlesungen über die Dialektik in two volumes: The first volume (10/1) presents a historical introduction, an editorial report and Schleiermacher's manuscripts (1811–1833); the second volume (10/2) contains selected transcripts of the lectures 1811, 1818/19, and 1822 together with an appendix with special notes, bibliography, and an index. This is the first ever publication of the complete transcripts of his lectures from 1811 and 1818/19, presented here in a critical edition. The recently discovered (anonymous) transcript of the lecture from 1818/19 deserves special attention because of its precise and complete account of the lecture. With the publication of these volumes, researchers now have access to a complete historical critical edition of the Dialektik, broadening at the same time the text base and complementing previous editions.
The Lectures on Practical Theology are one of the main works by important theologian and philosopher Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768–1834). This is the first critical edition of the lectures as part of the Critical Collected Works. It includes all of Schleiermacher’s manuscripts as well as six extensive sets of transcripts from different academic cohorts. Schleiermacher is considered the inventor of practical theology as a scholarly discipline.
This edition is the 12th volume in the lecture series of the Complete Critical Edition of Schleiermacher’s works. It presents the pronouncements made by Schleiermacher on pedagogy between 1810 and 1826, including writings emerging from the Prussian school reform; his lectures on pedagogy given in 1813/14, 1820/21, and 1826; and his thoughts on pedagogy that are attributable to the 1813/14, 1820/21 lectures.
This book is published as the 13th volume of the lecture section within the critical edition of the complete works of Schleiermacher. For each series of lectures on psychology from the summer semesters 1818, 1821, 1830 and the winter semester 1833/34, it contains a manuscript by Schleiermacher and a listener transcript. In addition, it provides a historical introduction and an editorial report.
This volume focuses on Schleiermacher's anthropology and aesthetics. It offers contributions from the Wittenberg Schleiermacher Symposia of 2019 and 2020 as well as other thematically relevant texts in a concentrated form and spans an arc between philosophical and theological perspectives that are informative for Schleiermacher's systematic thinking with regard to anthropological, aesthetic, and religion-theoretical considerations.
Part I of this volume contains Schleiermacher’s manuscripts for his Lectures on the Life of Jesus, presented in 1819–1832, the transcription of a lecture manuscript, and a transcript of the course from 1832. The large audience suggests that this was one of his most successful lectures. Part II contains manuscripts of the Lecture on the History of the Passion and Resurrection (1821) and a transcript of this course.
How many churches are there in the world? How are they constituted? What do their internal workings look like? Schleiermacher, who himself was engaged in many disputes in church politics, thought that prospective pastors should know about questions such as these, and delivered lectures on church geography and statistics, i.e. contemporary church studies. These lectures, documented in Schleiermacher's own manuscripts and his students' notes, are published here for the first time.
This volume delves into an extensive area of Schleiermacher’s work that has found little attention until now. On the basis of autographic text documents, transcripts, and official records, this publication offers insights into the practice of confirmation lessons from various perspectives, providing researchers with sources that can be analyzed biographically, systematic-theologically, and not least pedagogically.
