Deutsche Sprachgeschichte vom Spätmittelalter bis zur Gegenwart
The standard work on the history of the German language in a new, updated, and expanded edition. Following an introduction and discussion of basic principles, the first volume focuses on the German language in the transitional period between the Middle Ages and early modernity, especially during the early bourgeois period (14th to 16th centuries).
The second volume, which was revised in collaboration with the original author, focuses on the German language during the period of absolutism and the cultivation of language for the educated middle class. Through its unique interweaving of language history, cultural history and social history, this textbook addresses the needs of researchers and students from a broad range of disciplines.
