Schon seit dem Beginn einer Grammatikographie des Mittelhochdeutschen im 19. Jahrhundert ist die Kritik formuliert worden, die Grammatiken lieferten eine nur unvollständige oder gar mangelhafte Kenntnis der mittelhochdeutschen Sprache, da sie sich auf Texte der sog. "hochhöfischen Zeit’’ und das Konstrukt eines in den Textausgaben aufscheinenden ‘‘unwandelbaren Hochdeutschen’’ konzentrierten.
Die hier vorgelegte neue, wissenschaftliche Grammatik des Mittelhochdeutschen will diese Forschungslücke schließen und methodologisches Neuland betreten. Sie ist vollständig aus handschriftlichen Quellen erarbeitet und bedient sich neuerer, (korpus-)theoretischer und insbesondere auch technischer Möglichkeiten zur Erfassung und Beschreibung nicht-normalisierter Sprachstufen. Zu Grunde liegt ein maschinenlesbar aufbereitetes Korpus von 102 Texten mit ca. 1.000.000 Wortformen. Die Quellen – Verstexte; Prosatexte; Urkunden – wurden soweit möglich gleichmäßig nach bestimmten Zeiträumen, Sprachlandschaften und Textsorten ausgewählt, in ihren sprachlichen, dialektalen und graphischen Besonderheiten erfasst und grammatisch analysiert.
Geplant sind vier Bände: I. Laut und Schrift, II. Flexionsmorphologie, III. Wortbildung und IV. Syntax.
Inflectional Morphology is one of four volumes comprising the new Middle High German Grammar, which is based upon an extensive structured corpus of manuscripts dating from 1070 to 1350. It combines modern techniques of linguistic analysis and presentation with traditional philology, thus also imbuing it with the character of a comprehensive compendium.
The volume on word formation is the third part of a comprehensive new grammar of Middle High German. It is the first study to process and present MHG word formation from the systematic foundation of a comprehensive structured corpus of MHG manuscripts (1070–1350). Thus the volume closes a gap between the approaches to presenting OHG word formation and the various studies of word formation in Early New High German. The account of MHG word formation mainly follows a semantic approach and presents word formation from semasiological and onomasiological perspectives. The presentation combines modern linguistic methods with traditional philological approaches and should be of use both to linguistics and medievalists from different disciplines.
